The Sleep Apnea Pillow, Designed For CPAP Machine Users

Cushions, which pre-date the use of the modern pillow, were once considered to be luxury items used only for night time support and comfort by debilitated men and pregnant women. Today, catering to ever-more niche- specific bodily ills is an industry-wide standard in the pillow manufacturing business. There are pillows to protect joints, ease muscles and induce deeper sleep and better dreams. The sleep apnea pillow, however, is even more debility specific than those. The sleep apnea pillow conforms to the needs of CPAP machine users.

The word apnea refers to an abnormally long rest between breaths. Logically then, sleep apnea refers to those pauses which occur during sleep time. These periods of lapsed breathing, or low breathing, are called a hypopnea. They can be very short, passing in a matter of moments, or they can linger for some minutes, as well as occur up to hundreds of times during a sleeper’s rest.

Unfortunately, these periods of lapsed breathing make the sleeper’s sleep time far less restful than it should be, contributing also to daytime tiredness and potentially leading to dangerous conditions, such as hypertension. Because of this sufferers are often advised to use a CPAP machine. These machines provide “continuous positive airway pressure” via the use of air flow provided by an oxygen machine and a mask that fits over the apnea sufferer’s face. Naturally, sleeping with a nearly full-face mask and the requisite tubing to ensure constant oxygen, thus the elimination of missed breaths, requires less movement than most sleepers enjoy. Supine is the best way to use a CPAP machine. In any case, CPAP machines are far more practical than comfortable; enter the sleep apnea pillow.

Sleep apnea pillows have features that make using a CPAP machine more comfortable for the sleep apnea sufferer. Features specific to sleep apnea pillows include smaller sizes with varying heights for pressure relief and contouring, as well as cut out areas to accommodate tubing. With the tubing resting properly and safely mask leaks are avoided. Also, with the sleeper resting in correct head to body alignment he is less likely to move around or miss the mobility he may have been used to. Some sleep apnea pillows are small enough they can be used to augment a favorite regular pillow, adding lift and pressure support. A well-made sleep apnea pillow may also contain features like quilting and hypoallergenic fabrics and fillers.
